I recently retired from forty years of teaching Black film, Film Editing, and Special Effects at a 4-year liberal arts college. I continue to pursue my interest in film on a blog, emiliavopines.com, devoted to the visual analysis of films by new Black filmmakers. My aim is to provide new filmmakers with the type of academic analysis that is usually reserved for more established directors. I am also interested in 3d digital reconstructions of African-American sites of historical importance.

Mercedes’ writing explores the curiosity and vulnerability within relationships and life. She is the lead writer and producer of the quirky comedic webseries, All My Friends Are Married. Her webseries has been the official selection at several festivals. In 2016, Season 2 was picked up for distribution by the Black Film and TV collective. Last year, Mercedes’ pilot, The Itty Bitty Tittie Committee, was a semi-finalist for Issa Rae’s Color Creative teleplay contest. With a blend of teen angst and dry humor, the pilot placed top 10 out of 1000 entries. Her screenplay, Dwayne and Conner’s 9th Grade Mixtape made it to the second round of the prestigious Austin Film Festival. Judges enjoyed the banter of this buddy comedy revolving around misfits in Detroit in the 1990’s. She is a graduate from NYU Tisch School of the Arts for Film and Dramatic Writing. She has a MA in Educational Theatre from NYU Steinhart’s School of Education. As a storyteller, she hopes to leave her mark through creating a community of collaborators seeking to tell impactful stories that increase grace and love for all people. And laugh a bunch while doing it.
