This week we’re loving Minimum Wage! Wait, that sounds crazy. Rephrase – this week we’re loving opportunities that have made Minimum Wage possible. No, not corporate greed, the ‘New Normal’. Okay in the interest of clarity, let us rephrase…this week we’re loving opportunities launched by Issa Rae, Charles D. King, Julie Dash and Franklin Leonard – opportunities for us, by us.  Is this the new normal?

Check out this week’s standouts below.

  1. Project Greenlight & The New Normal Writing Contest

Project Greenlight Digital Studios provides premium content for online audiences. Together with Issa Rae’s Color Creative TV, it’s The New Normal contest is designed to find emerging writers with underrepresented voices. The first submission selected for development from the contest is anthology series ‘Minimum Wage’ by winning writers Maya Houston, Rebecca Hu and Arpita Kuma. The series centers around “five different employees of a run-down fast food restaurant in Los Angeles, who are working to give the business a much-needed revitalization, in addition to their own individual lives.”

2. MACRO Ventures by Charles D. King

Former talent agent and partner at William Morris Endeavor, Charles D. King has started a new media company MACRO Ventures. King is arguably the leading African American talent agent for artists in the music, TV and film industries, and continues with his latest career move, to be an advocate for minority talent. With MACRO he seeks to develop and distribute feature films, TV series, and digital content targeting African-American, Latino and multicultural markets.

Queries for script submissions by unrepresented writers can be sent via the Macro Ventures website.

3. ‘Daughters’ Festival Celebrates Female Filmmakers of Color

Julie Dash’s 1991 film ‘Daughters of the Dust’ was a barrier-shattering achievement. It was the first feature film by a black woman to have a theatrical release, and it is this very feat that inspired South Carolina’s festival, ‘Daughters: Celebrating Emerging Female Filmmakers of Color.’ The festival, featuring work by contemporary female filmmakers of color, will run from November 11th – 13th and be hosted by The Nickelodeon Theatre, a non-profit art house cinema.

4. Black List and Boutique Hotel Chain ‘Autograph Collection’ Partner to Create Writer-Based ‘Social Spaces

Black List founder Franklin Leonard and hotel chain Autograph Collection have partnered to host a physical space for writer-focused programming at Sundance 2017.  No stranger to film, Autograph leads a larger film initiative which includes an Independent Film Channel featuring works selected by FilmBuff, made fully available to it’s hotel guests. Outside of Sundance, Autograph will also host Black List events such as Black List Table Reads, and The Black List Screenwriter Lab, at its hotel properties throughout the world.
