We’re back at it again with giving you some flicks to check out that are created, produced and directed by POC. This week under the BTFC spotlight is the web series called A Whole New Irving. This is a hilarious show about a misanthropic millennial who is scratching to survive his post-grad life in the west side of Los Angeles. From having to get around on his bike, working an odd job and earning money to pay back his student loans, the main character Irving is trying to find a better way to “drive to his dreams.” The award-winning show is written and directed by Terry Dawson. Although this web series marks the debut of his directorial work, Dawson shares in a YouTube interview that he in no way intended to have Irving represent himself as a person. When responding to the questions of what kind of messages he first wanted to show on screen or how he’d display what matters to him as a filmmaker, he simply replied with:
“A young Black dude on a spiritual journey seemed like a very cool thing.”

At BTFC, we give props to creative minds likes Terry Dawson. With the world seeming to be only moving faster, it’s easy to relate to a classic underdog story when we’re chasing our own dreams. For a lot of us POC, we have come across many instances when there is a burning desire to want and expect more. The way we view and measure success has less to do now with the “American Dream” because we’ve always shared a different reality. With more shows to reassure us that it’s all about the destination, we’re reminded that obstacles and patience are important elements in the process towards “making it.” Find out if Irving makes it by checking out season 1 of A Whole New Irving currently streaming on YoutTube.
