Today’s series is laced with that Latin flavor you can only find in New York City. Created by Julia Ahumada Grob and Yamin Segal, shown below, the show East Willy B , set in Brooklyn, follows Willie, a Latino bar owner who is recently dumped by his fiancée Maggie, the series antagonist. Failing to accept rejection and with seemingly little to lose, the storyline takes us on Willie’s journey as he desperately tries to win back Maggie’s love and affection in the most comedic of ways.

The feel of the show easily reminds viewers of many parts of the city that resonate with Latinos and their cultural imprint like Williamsburg, Washington Heights, Corona and the South Bronx. What makes the series unique is not simply its Latino base, but more significantly the issues that are incorporated throughout each episode that involve people of all backgrounds. Issues such as cultural identity, stereotypes and the controversial topic of gentrification are brought to light in each episode making this dramedy something more than your average TV series.

It takes on real issues and concerns with gentle yet humorous examination. As a result, East Willy B has gained significant attention and success with funding from supporters and praise from celebrities since its start in 2013. Though the series only has a single season, quality over quantity certainly does apply to this show via its seamless camerawork, dynamic storytelling, and versatile acting. For any content creator looking for a series that tackles comedy, drama, culture, and social issues all at once – East Willy B is an absolute must watch guaranteed to leave you satisfied.

The only problem thwarting his attempts is the new man in Maggie’s life, Tommy, the owner of a popular neighborhood bar right next door to Willie’s bar! Stubborn and pressed to win her over, Willie cannot always tell just how far he is from ever getting her back. In the pilot episode, Maggie calls him to merely drop off his old things that he left at her house, but to Willie this is cause for an impromptu, celebratory song of “Maggie called me!” and the delusional assumption they are getting back together.

With an endless supply of alcohol at hand and the witty and sometimes crass opinions of his bar friends, there are endless laughs and a variety of characters to delve into, each one feeling truly authentic and memorable.  East Willy B hosts an all-Latino cast and proudly incorporates the use of “Spanglish”, the ever-increasing hybrid language of many Latin Americans, which gives the series an even layered portrayal of the Latino experience.
