If you were ever in need of a super-group of Black women heroes with feminism at the forefront of their journey to justice, you’ve discovered an incredible series!

As stated in their words, “We need to look out for ourselves first, and then our Black brothers… and then maybe white women. But they have it good… so…” And in this moment, the intention of The Foxy Five, Written & Directed by Jabu Nadia Newman, was set.

This Black webseries follows the adventures of the white- supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy smashing group of 5 young womxn from Cape Town –The Foxy Five. Each womxn represents a different struggle and set of ideals within feminism. Despite their ideological differences and the clashes they often cause, the womxn are a tight-nit sisterhood that always manage to band together in overcoming The Man.

The Foxy Five tackles the dealings of race, gender, and sexuality for this palatable and entertaining Black web series. Jabu calls on the power of various womxn with differentiating qualities that uniquely add to the work of dismantling oppressive forces: a factor that also hilariously creates friction. Actress Duduza Mchunu portrays Unity Bond, Qiniso van Damme is Prolly Plebs, Tatenda Wekwatenzi tackles Blaq Beauty, Qondiswa James is Femme Fatale & Nala Xaba bring Womxn We to light.

Nadia tells, OkayAfrica, “#FeesMustFall was a time when I was feeling very helpless and unable to process how I was feeling. I was learning about so many new concepts that I’d never understood or heard before, and I was hearing it from people who were my age and who looked like me.

This Black filmmaker also expresses that her intention with the series was to further represent various types of African women, who often are clouded by the Western projection of African stereotypes. Inspiration of the politically-charged blaxploitation films such as Foxy Brown & Shaft, lends a hand to her 70s styled visual coupled with modern societal issues.
