Building Your Network

On Thursday, Oct. 28th at 7:30 PM ET; join us for another conversation on directing – and this time, we’re talking about building your network – and netWORTH! 

Building your network can be trivial if you’re unsure where to start. Is film school still a better option than going the unorthodox route? How do you distinguish yourself – better yet, how do you even find your voice and brand in such a saturated market? We’re taking the guesswork and self-doubt out of your journey with this panel of creatives who have taken different paths in their journey – but all meet here at the BTFC Director’s Chair!

This panel will be moderated by award-winning filmmaker, musician, photographer, and artist, Quincy G. Ledbetter (Director, 2021 Webby Award Winner “Alieu the Dreamer”). Quincy will be joined by other multi-hyphenate creatives who have chartered unknown territory but are still Making Their Work! This panel features Denzel Whitaker (NAACP Award-Winning Actor & Filmmaker), Lisa Janae (Actor, Filmmaker & Founder of TERRA Visuals LLC), Craig T. Williams (Writer/Producer/Editor), and Yhá Mourhia Wright (Award-Winning Filmmaker & Actor, “#LoveMyRoomie”).

Our discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A – see you there and come ready to take notes!

BTFC Member Orientation

The Black TV & Film Collective holds member orientation because we want to ensure that members new and old are aware of simple, easy steps you can take to maximize your membership.  Now that you’ve joined our organization, we want to make sure you both know the tools and resources that are available to you, and how to use them. This BTFC orientation session is important to ensure that you understand the process for seeking and lending help. We want to hear what you seek to gain from your membership and encourage you to jump right in and get involved. We also want you to meet each other!

If you haven’t had a chance to explore the BTFC website, take some time to review it. Come to member orientation with an open mind, and come with ideas on ways to make the BTFC better serve your needs!

Online Work Date

Join us for an Online Work Date. What exactly does this mean, you ask? It means you bring your scripts, your program apps, your to do lists– really, anything you have that needs to get done…because it’s a WORK date.  Also, should attendees wish to spend some time table reading pages, that can happen too!

Sometimes as artists, we make procrastination our best friend and easily become professional self-sabotagers. Working and writing doesn’t have to be a solitary task. Join other writers,  scribes and scribblers from the Black TV & Film Collective and create more pages on your web series, narrative films or short screenplays.

Open your laptop, bring your pen, pencil, paper, or whatever writing tool suits you. Make sure your batteries are charged, literally and figuratively!

We feel you, writing / working on our projects can be a lonely and arduous endeavor. So help ease the difficulty of bringing ideas to life by committing to a person, date, and time and most importantly pen to paper. Making an online work date to work with other artists will help you stay on task with your projects.

About Letitia

LETITIA GUILLORY is a multi-hyphenate creative whose works spans, theatre, film and episodic content.

Her work has been presented at PS 122, Lincoln Center, O’Neill Playwrights Conference, BRIC Media Arts among others.

She produced the award-winning short comedy, Pas Honteux (REVOLT TV) and the powerful LGBTQ short Winston. Letitia’s writing credits include the plays: The Further Adventures of Gussie Mae in America, MAE and THE (beginning of the End), Crawfish Tales, RED and 8:42 (Austin Film Festival Second Rounder); screenplays: Hound Dog (Oaxaca Film Festival Global Script Competition Finalist), Grace, The Last Time, Lights Out and Shanghai ’37; and the teleplays: Parish, gATES (Second Rounder Austin Film Festival, Semifinalist Screencraft TV Pilot Launch) and Salvation.

A proud alum of the University of Texas (BFA, Drama) and New York University (MA, Performance Studies), Letitia remains inspired and grateful.

Speakers Series: Producing Short Films During COVID

Are you wondering how and when to take your script into production; particularly in light of the continued COVID pandemic? This is a question only you can answer, based on your comfort level, capabilities as a producer and resources. To help with your assessment, join us for a chat with Producer and Certified COVID Safety Officer Okema T. Moore, as she shares production protocols and union rules that all film productions, large and small, should be aware of and implement if they decide to proceed with filming. During the chat Okema will share her experience on set and on location throughout the pandemic, as a producer/director and CCO respectively, along with best practices and budgeting ideas. Okema Moore
Okema T. Moore is an actress, producer, writer, and director. She most recently completed producing – during the pandemic – the PBS/American Masters docu-series Unladylike2020 and producing/directing a feature-length documentary for network television.  As a regional EMMY nominee and an alum of the Tribeca Film Festival, Okema has produced and directed a number of projects ranging from web series – like 2019 ABFF winner Little Apple – to branded content for Netflix, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks and FOX. She has also produced shows for the Food Network, TLC and OWN.  Okema is a Certified COVID Compliance Officer for clients that include Netflix, Spike Lee’s 40 Acres & a Mule, NY’s Governor Cuomo and the 2020 Gotham Awards.

Announcing the official FILM FAM SPRING ’21 MIXER going down on Tuesday 2/9!

In the spirit of celebration and collaboration, your favorite organizations are coming together to break virtual bread, toast and most importantly BUILD! Build on projects, ideas and opportunities to work together this Spring and Summer! In the house we’ll have the Black TV & Film Collective + Black Film Space + Hue You Know + Brown Girls Doc Mafia ALL in ONE virtual networking session.

 We’ll start with ICE BREAKERS in the room so everyone can be introduced, then hop into BREAKOUT rooms where each room will have to work together to answer questions for PRIZES like FINAL DRAFT software, COMPLIMENTARY BTFC and BFS memberships, and private one-on-one consults with industry producers.  

While we’d MUCH rather do this event in person, we’re making it work with what we have which is technology, members who are still planning work and willing hearts and minds.  No where else in NYC we’d rather be on 1/22 than building and bonding with our film family. PS. Don’t forget to have your pitches! We firmly believe that you need more than money to make work, what you truly need is friends. We can’t help you with your projects if we don’t know about them. Together we go further.
