Office Hours: Get Help On Your Projects

End the year right and “MakeYourWork! Chat with BTFC Co-Founder and award-winning writer, producer, and director Laura Fielder during BTFC Office Hours!  She’ll do her best to support you and help you move your project forward! 

During BTFC Office Hours we’ll answer general production questions and provide an environment where you can get advice and feedback on your projects from industry professionals.

How can we better describe them? It’s an open door for any member who would like to just come in and ask a question. Get a second pair of eyes on a rough cut, get some help on budgets, have your script reviewed…Remember back in the day when our professors had office hours and you would just go in to ask a question or get some help? That’s exactly what these office hours are like.

Join us to talk about your projects and ideas, so that you’re better equipped to move them forward. It’s all-time well spent.

NOTE: 40-minute slots will be assigned on a first RSVP basis. A Zoom link will be sent to you 48 hours before your session. Please block out 6:00 – 8:00 PM ET on your calendar until your slot is received.

 

ABOUT LAURA

Laura Fielder

Laura Fielder is a writer, director and producer. Her award winning projects have screened at the Hip Hop Film Festival, the Toronto Black Film Festival, The Katra Film Series, and the American Black Film Festival. Laura’s screenplays have placed in numerous competitions including the BlueCat Screenplay Competition. Laura is a working member of The Gotham’s Expanding Communities Summit – a cohort of diverse Independent film professionals. She is also a member of NYWIFT. Laura is a graduate of UCLA TFT Professional Screenwriting Program. A classically trained violinist, Laura is an alum of The CUNY Graduate Center (MA, Ethnomusicology).

Screenwriter’s Workshop: Table Reading Our Work

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, BTFC screenwriters come together for online table read sessions and to workshop our screenplays. If you are working on a piece and would like to participate by having your pages read aloud, RSVP. For active writers, this is an event that you should not miss. Share your work, listen to the work of other writers, and get valuable feedback from other BTFC members. Each session is a read-athon. So if you would like your work table read, RSVP for this writer’s workshop session.

During read-athons, we can usually read about 4-6 works. Writers should submit up to 6 pages to be read aloud. The scripts are read in order of attendance on the zoom.

If you are a writer an actor, a producer, DP or other looking for upcoming productions, come and meet the writer/directors getting their work ready for primetime. This workshop is a great networking opportunity!

SOFY SOLOMON is a producer committed to telling meaningful stories and developing new voices. She comes from a family that endlessly re-watches certain movies/shows, and she hopes to contribute to that short-list of highly-curated content.

Sofy helped create and continues to run the Sesame Workshop Writers’ Room, a talent incubator that has launched writing careers at Disney, Netflix, DreamWorks, and beyond. As a volunteer at the New York Public Library, she started a free writing workshop series that is open to the public.

With origins in the US, Eritrea, and Ethiopia; a Yale degree in Economics and a French Masters in Anthropology/Music; and a growing collection of cellos in Paris, NYC and Alabama—she’s learned not to put anyone in a box.

Then join the Black TV & Film Collective and the Parity Project for a virtual conversation with Iz Rubenstein, screenwriter and the Manager of the Episodic Program at the Sundance Institute to chop it up about this great program, application dos and don’ts, career strategy and more.

About the Sundance Episodic Lab

Offering one of the few training grounds for independent voices to develop an original series and pilot script, the Sundance Institute Episodic Program provides artists with the tools, training, and industry access to move their projects and careers forward.

Launched in 2014, the Sundance Episodic Program is an entry point and sustaining force for emerging episodic writers and creators across all platforms. Through a rigorous lab experience and customized year-round support, the program provides artists with the tools, training, and industry access to move their careers forward. The Episodic Program supports one unified Episodic Lab with two unique tracks, the Episodic Lab: Pilot to Series and Episodic Lab: Idea to Pilot. Our series track centers around revising a pilot and refining a professional pitch, while our idea track focuses on taking a concept from the early stages of development all the way through to a polished draft.
 Both programs are immersive two-part experiences that begin in the fall, offering writers an opportunity to workshop an original pilot to develop their writing and pitching skills. Working with accomplished showrunners, producers, and executives, the fellows participate in creative workshops, receive feedback on their projects, and engage in simulated writers’ rooms to break story in a collaborative space. 
Fellows reconvene in the spring to receive feedback on revised drafts, work on their pitch process, and meet with creative executives and producers to discuss the industry landscape.

About The Parity Project

The Parity Project advocates for fair economic and narrative inclusion and equity of black artists, executives and representatives in television and film.

We are fighting to ensure that all black entertainment professionals, including writers, directors, actors, cinematographers, editors, executives, producers and representatives, reach parity in the market that’s on par with our population in the United States through: career mentorship,  collaboration, accountability, networking, equal and fair representation, training and education.

The Black TV & Film Collective is a 501c3 development and production hub with a simple mission: to create career advancing opportunities for Black and African Descent artists to achieve financial sustainability within the entertainment industry.

We provide critical production support enabling members to build a strong body of work, supplemented by workshops and labs focused on craft development and networking events to foster relationship building.

BTFC office hours are good for health – the health of your projects that is. Chat with BTFC Member and writer, director, producer London Williams about your project! During Office Hours we do our best to offer insight and feedback that can help push you forward!

For artists, isolation can be deadly to projects. In fact, it stops many projects before they have even fully begun. BTFC Office Hours were implemented to combat the isolation that we all sometimes fall victim to. During office hours we’ll answer general production questions and provide an environment where you can come in and work on your projects in the company of others.

How can we better describe them? Its an open door for any member who would like to just come in and ask a question. Get a second pair of eyes on a rough cut, get some help on budgets, use a computer, work in the company of others. Remember back in the day when our professors had office hours and you would just go in to ask a question or get some help? That is what these office hours are like. You might have us all to yourself, or there may be one or two other filmmakers in the line ahead of you.

Join us to talk about your projects and ideas, so that you’re better equipped to move them forward. Its all time well spent.

About London Williams

London Williams is a filmmaker/sports and entertainment executive that was first introduced to TV and Film as a floor manager for Dallas Community Television (formerly Cable Access of Dallas). He also spent much of his early career at Project FX Productions where he wrote and produced theater. He then went on to oversee the promotion, touring, and publishing divisions of SE Presents, Inc., a company that produced artists, concerts, and comedy shows. London attended the Digital Film Academy of New York conservatory program. London produces for Williams Family ABE (Arts-Business-Education) focusing on societal impact films. London also has a Doctorate in Business Administration and an MBA in sports and entertainment management. Having produced over four feature films, four short films, and a tv series with distribution in the past three years, London is poised to continue thriving and contributing to the film industry. London served as the producer on OutGrown which recently secured a 3 year licensing deal with Up Faith & Family TV.

About Laura Fielder

LAURA FIELDER is an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker.  She made her directing debut with Milan’s First Day (2015).

Her recent short, The Company You Keep (2019), is currently making the film festival rounds.

Laura’s films have been screened at festivals like The Hip Hop Film Festival, The Toronto Black Film Festival, The Katra Film Series, and The Baltimore International Film Festival.  Laura is a graduate of the UCLA TFT Professional Program in Screenwriting.
